In the ‘Camino’ of Guglielmo
Following the path of the patron saint of Irpinia

An itinerary of the soul, a symphony of emotions in which each traveler becomes a seeker of beauty and a bearer of hope. This is the Path of Guglielmo, which this year began to mark its stages through a series of “Walks in Company,” a packed calendar of appointments that wind around the places of the Saint of Vercelli, the protector of Irpinia. The inspirer of the path is the man, Guglielmo, more than the saint, as architect Angelo Verderosa, project coordinator and Touring Club consul, has often recalled: “The young Guglielmo, not yet a saint, is our guide. He had prepared to depart for the Holy Land but chose to stop in Irpinia, founding Montevergine and then the Goleto Abbey. The path is conceived as an immaterial infrastructure that crosses 3 regions, 30 villages, for a total of 320 kilometers, involving 4 regional parks.” Travelers, technicians, and explorers of the places of faith are working to test the various cartographic tracks of the Path, which officially began two years ago with the founding memorandum of understanding signed at the Loreto Abbey Palace in Montevergine, precisely on February 14, 2023, after a long period of inspections, exchanges of ideas, and concerted walks among the municipalities of Chiusano di San Domenico, Ospedaletto d’Alpinolo, Mercogliano, and Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi, together with the associations Club Alpino Italiano, Touring Club Italiano, Irpinia 7x, Info Irpinia and the Pro loco of Ospedaletto and Mercogliano.
The project is part of the initiatives financed by the PNRR for the cultural and social regeneration of small historic villages, with Chiusano di San Domenico and Ospedaletto D’Alpinolo as lead municipalities. The Path includes 15 stages, 30 villages, and three regions crossed (Campania, Basilicata, and Puglia) among history, culture, and legend, along a 320 km route that from the Abbey of Montevergine winds up to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Barletta, passing through the convent of San Francesco a Folloni in Montella (AV), the Goleto Abbey in Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi (AV), the Abbey of Santa Maria di Pierno in San Fele (PZ), and the Crypt of Santa Margherita in Melfi (PZ), just to name a few stages.
A cartography of friends brimming with enthusiasm, passion for history, and for Irpinia initiated the ambitious project: “The path was conceived as an idea in 2012 by a group of friends who gathered around the Irpinia 7X association,” explains Verderosa. “The first path we walked went from the monastery of San Francesco a Folloni to the Goleto Abbey. Every year, on the feast of San Guglielmo, we have repeated this Path. Then, in 2023, it was structured with a very broad memorandum of understanding, and the 15 stages in which it is articulated today emerged. It is a path that has brought together friends and walkers for 13 years.”
The recognition received this year is significant. On the proposal of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Path of Guglielmo was included in the “Jubilee Paths 2025” and within the project “On the Path – Abbeys of Europe Jubilee 2025.”
Every month – on Saturdays and Sundays – there are two appointments, two walks in company, whose information can be found on the website www.camminodiguglielmo.it, where technical sheets, modes, and accommodation options are provided. In April, a special stage is planned: on April 12 and 13 (Palm Sunday), there will be a pilgrimage to the seven Churches in Rome. A route conceived by San Filippo Neri in the 16th century, which is among the oldest Roman traditions. It is about 25 kilometers that wind through the city, reaching the Roman countryside, the catacombs, and some of the magnificent basilicas of Rome. Those who visit the Eternal City at St. Peter’s Basilica, once they have crossed the Holy Door, can pay homage to the mighty marble statue of St. Guglielmo, one of the principal founding Saints of monastic congregations, a source of pride for our Irpinia.
On April 26 and 27, the stages 14 and 15 of the Path will be walked, from Minervino to Canosa and from Canosa to Barletta. In May, the historic stage of the Path will take place: on May 31 and June 1, the journey will go from Cassano-Montella to Lake Laceno (Stage 4 / 11 km) and from Lake Laceno to the Goleto Abbey (Stage 5 / 22 km). These are places cherished by Guglielmo: the cave of the Apparition, on Lake Laceno, where Guglielmo arrived after the foundation of Montevergine and where he later met Giovanni da Matera (the Apparition indicated to them the paths to follow and the missions to accomplish); the Goleto Abbey, founded by Guglielmo in 1133 where he died in 1142; his mortal remains remained here, in the Goleto cenoby, until 1807, then transferred to Montevergine where they are still kept.
From Thursday, June 5 to Sunday, June 8, the entire Path of Guglielmo will be crossed along the 15 stages, by bike, e-mtb or by car. On June 28 and 29, 2025, the journey will go from Monticchio to Melfi (Stage 11 / 17 km) and from Melfi to Venosa (Stage 12 / 20 km). From the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, located on the shore of the smaller lake of Monticchio, a place of extraordinary beauty and mystical suggestion, it will arrive in Melfi, a resting and study city chosen by the young pilgrim Guglielmo while he was heading along the Appia to embark for the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.
From July to December, there will be a series of other appointments, always consultable on the site. The journey will always unfold along the historical-cultural, artistic, anthropological, and naturalistic traces that mark with mystical and indelible meanings the places of Guglielmo (1085-1142), the young pilgrim remembered for his high moral example, for his penances, and by virtue of his love for prayer and the search for the most hidden corners of the human soul. Born in Vercelli to a noble family, he became poor for the love of Christ. At only 14 years old, he embarked on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, where the tomb of the apostle James the Greater is still located. After 5 years, via the Via Francigena, he went to Rome to the tombs of the apostles Peter and Paul. Then from Rome, via the Appian Way, he headed south of the Peninsula with the intention of embarking for the Holy Land. He couldn’t make it. Near Taranto, he was attacked by robbers who, disappointed by the meager loot, left him on the brink of death. After the ordeal, the young pilgrim continued to spread his message of faith. Esteemed and supported by Roger II, King of Sicily, of whom he became the confessor, he founded several monasteries, including Montevergine on Mount Partenio, the SS. Salvatore at Goleto in the territory of S. Angelo dei Lombardi in the province of Avellino, and the Abbey of Santa Maria di Pierno in San Fele in Basilicata.
The Saint was declared patron of Irpinia in 1942 by Pope Pius XII and is iconographically represented with a tamed wolf due to one of his most famous miracles. When he lived as a hermit in the mountains, the donkey, which was his precious means of transport, was torn apart by a wolf, which Guglielmo miraculously transformed into a tame pack animal.
St. Guglielmo is celebrated on June 25, the day of his death, which occurred on the night between June 24 and June 25. He is celebrated in the province of Avellino at Montevergine and Goleto.
In the year of the Jubilee of Hope proclaimed by Pope Francis, the Path of Guglielmo becomes a metaphor for life, with its load of fatigue and existential questions mixed with the search for truth, individual courage, and the common effort to rethink existence as a work of art. Abbeys, sanctuaries, cathedrals, castles, caves, mountains, rivers, and lakes crossed by the travelers of hope are the stages of that “transhumance of emotions” that the Path intends to trace, as well captured by the claim of territorial marketing that supports the project.
Our journey along the Paths of Irpinia – inaugurated this year with a specific column – continues. We like to imagine that each path of the senses and the soul gives a strong impulse to the cultural and social regeneration of small villages.

Siguiendo las huellas del Santo patrón de Irpinia

Un itinerario del alma, una sinfonía de emociones en la que cada viajero se convierte en buscador de belleza y portador de esperanza. Es el Camino de Guglielmo que este año ha comenzado a sellar sus etapas a través de una serie de “Caminatas en compañía”, un apretado calendario de citas que serpentean alrededor de los lugares del Santo de Vercelli, protector de Irpinia. El inspirador del recorrido es el hombre, Guglielmo, más que el Santo, como ha recordado varias veces el arquitecto Angelo Verderosa, coordinador del proyecto y cónsul del Touring Club: “El joven Guglielmo, aún no Santo, es nuestra guía. Se había preparado para partir hacia Tierra Santa, pero eligió detenerse en Irpinia, fundando Montevergine y luego la Abadía del Goleto. El camino está concebido como una infraestructura inmaterial que atraviesa 3 regiones, 30 pueblos, en un total de 320 kilómetros, involucrando 4 parques regionales”. Viajeros, técnicos y exploradores de los lugares de fe están trabajando para probar las diversas rutas cartográficas del Camino, que oficialmente nació hace dos años con el protocolo de entendimiento fundacional firmado en el Palacio abacial Loreto de Montevergine, precisamente el 14 de febrero de 2023, después de un largo período de inspecciones, intercambio de ideas y caminatas concertadas entre los municipios de Chiusano di San Domenico, Ospedaletto d’Alpinolo, Mercogliano y Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi, junto con las asociaciones Club Alpino Italiano, Touring Club Italiano, Irpinia 7x, Info Irpinia y las Pro loco de Ospedaletto y Mercogliano.
El proyecto se inserta en las iniciativas financiadas por el PNRR para la regeneración cultural y social de los pequeños pueblos históricos, con Chiusano di San Domenico y Ospedaletto D’Alpinolo como municipios líderes. El Camino incluye 15 etapas, 30 pueblos y tres regiones cruzadas (Campania, Basilicata y Puglia) entre historia, cultura y leyenda, a lo largo de una ruta de 320 km que desde la Abadía de Montevergine se extiende hasta la Basílica del Santo Sepulcro en Barletta, pasando por el convento de San Francisco a Folloni en Montella (AV), la Abadía del Goleto en Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi (AV), la Abadía de Santa María di Pierno en San Fele (PZ) y la Cripta de Santa Margarita en Melfi (PZ), solo por nombrar algunas etapas.
Un grupo de amigos entusiastas y apasionados por la historia y por Irpinia puso en marcha el ambicioso proyecto: “El camino nació como idea en 2012 por parte de un grupo de amigos que se reunieron alrededor de la asociación Irpinia 7X”, explica Verderosa. “El primer camino que recorrimos iba desde el monasterio de San Francisco a Folloni hasta la Abadía del Goleto. Cada año, en la festividad de San Guglielmo, hemos repetido este Camino. Luego, en 2023, se estructuró con un protocolo de entendimiento muy amplio y surgieron las 15 etapas en las que se articula hoy. Es un camino que reúne a amigos y caminantes desde hace 13 años”.
Este año se ha recibido un reconocimiento importante. A propuesta de la Presidencia del Consejo de Ministros, el Camino de Guglielmo fue incluido en los “Caminos del Jubileo 2025” y dentro del proyecto “En Camino – Abadías de Europa Jubileo 2025”.
Cada mes, los sábados y domingos, hay dos citas, dos caminatas en compañía, cuya información se puede encontrar en el sitio www.camminodiguglielmo.it, donde se indican fichas técnicas, modalidades y opciones de alojamiento. En el mes de abril está prevista una etapa especial: el 12 y el 13 de abril (Domingo de Ramos) habrá una peregrinación a las siete Iglesias en Roma. Un recorrido ideado por San Felipe Neri en el siglo XVI, que se encuentra entre las tradiciones romanas más antiguas. Se trata de unos 25 kilómetros que serpentean a lo largo de toda la ciudad, llegando al campo romano, las catacumbas y algunas de las magníficas basílicas de Roma. Quienes visiten la Ciudad Eterna en la Basílica de San Pedro, una vez cruzada la Puerta Santa, podrán rendir homenaje a la poderosa estatua de mármol de San Guglielmo, uno de los principales Santos fundadores de congregaciones monásticas, orgullo de nuestra Irpinia.
El 26 y 27 de abril, en cambio, se recorrerán las etapas 14 y 15 del Camino, es decir, de Minervino a Canosa y de Canosa a Barletta. En el mes de mayo será el turno de la etapa histórica del Camino: el 31 de mayo y el 1 de junio se irá de Cassano-Montella al Lago Laceno (Etapa 4 / 11 km) y del Lago Laceno a la Abadía del Goleto (Etapa 5 / 22 km). Son los lugares tan queridos por Guglielmo: la cueva de la Aparición, en el lago Laceno, donde Guglielmo llega después de la fundación de Montevergine y donde luego conocerá a Giovanni da Matera (la Aparición les indicará los caminos a seguir y las misiones a realizar); la Abadía del Goleto, fundada por Guglielmo en 1133 y donde murió en 1142; sus restos mortales permanecieron aquí, en el cenobio del Goleto, hasta 1807, luego trasladados a Montevergine donde aún se conservan.
Del jueves 5 al domingo 8 de junio se recorrerá todo el Camino de Guglielmo, a lo largo de las 15 etapas, en bicicleta e-mtb o con coche. El 28 y 29 de junio de 2025 se irá de Monticchio a Melfi (Etapa 11 / 17 km) y de Melfi a Venosa (Etapa 12 / 20 km). Desde la Abadía de San Miguel Arcángel, situada en la orilla del lago menor de Monticchio, un lugar micaélico de extraordinaria belleza y sugerencia mística, se llegará a Melfi, ciudad de parada y estudio elegida por el joven peregrino Guglielmo mientras se dirigía por la vía Apia hacia el embarque al Santo Sepulcro en Jerusalén.
De julio a diciembre habrá una sucesión de otras citas, siempre consultables en el sitio. El viaje siempre se desarrollará a lo largo de las huellas histórico-culturales, artísticas, antropológicas y naturalísticas que salpican de significados místicos e indelebles los lugares de Guglielmo (1085-1142), el joven peregrino recordado por su altísimo ejemplo moral, por sus penitencias, y en virtud de su amor por la oración y por la búsqueda de los rincones más recónditos del alma humana. Nacido en Vercelli de noble familia, se hizo pobre por amor de Cristo. A los 14 años se echó a andar peregrinando hasta Santiago de Compostela donde se encuentra la tumba del apóstol Santiago el Mayor. Después de 5 años, a través de la vía Francígena, se dirigió a Roma sobre las tumbas de los apóstoles Pedro y Pablo. Luego desde Roma, a través de la vía Apia, se dirigió hacia el sur de la Península con la intención de embarcarse para Tierra Santa. No lo logró. En Tarento fue asaltado por ladrones que, desilusionados por el magro botín, lo dejaron al borde de la muerte. Después de la desventura, el joven peregrino continuó difundiendo su mensaje de fe. Estimado y apoyado por Roger II rey de Sicilia, de quien se convirtió en confesor, fue fundador de varios monasterios entre los cuales el de Montevergine en el monte Partenio, el SS. Salvatore en el Goleto en el territorio de S. Angelo dei Lombardi en provincia de Avellino y la Abadía de Santa María de Pierno en San Fele en Basilicata.
El Santo fue declarado Patrón de Irpinia en 1942 por el Papa Pío XII y se representa iconográficamente junto a un lobo domesticado debido a uno de sus milagros más conocidos. Cuando vivía como ermitaño en las montañas, el asno que era su valioso medio de transporte fue devorado por un lobo, que luego Guglielmo transformó prodigiosamente en un manso animal de carga.
San Guglielmo se celebra el 25 de junio, día de su muerte, ocurrida en la noche del 24 al 25 de junio. En la provincia de Avellino se celebra en Montevergine y en el Goleto.
En el Año del Jubileo de la Esperanza convocado por el Papa Francisco, el Camino de Guglielmo se convierte en una metáfora de la vida, con su carga de esfuerzo e interrogantes existenciales mezclados con la búsqueda de la verdad, el coraje individual y el esfuerzo común de repensar la existencia como una obra de arte. Abadías, santuarios, catedrales, castillos, cuevas, montañas, ríos y lagos atravesados por los viajeros de la esperanza son las etapas de esa “transhumancia de emociones” que el Camino pretende trazar, como ha captado bien el lema del marketing territorial que subyace al proyecto.
Nuestro viaje a lo largo de los Caminos de Irpinia – inaugurado este año con una sección especial – continúa. Nos gusta imaginar que cada recorrido de los sentidos y del alma da un fuerte impulso a la regeneración cultural y social de los pequeños pueblos.
